108 Sun Salutations with Gina & Inspirational Music!

The Global Mala Project was initiated by Shiva Rea in 2007 as a way to unite yoga, selfless service and global consciousness. The purpose of the Global Mala Project is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school and style of yoga to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based on the sacred cycle of 108 on September 20th, the Fall Equinox and the UN International Peace Day. Each Global Mala event is dedicated to raising funds for a charitable organization of our choice. Again this year we are so pleased to offer you the opportunity to be the Kansas City "bead" on the global mala!

Please join Gina & Friends in offering 108 Sun Salutations and the dedication of all funds raised to Off the Mat, Into the World. Off the Mat, Into the Worldª (OTM) is a program led by Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, and Suzanne Sterling that aims to inspire and guide us to find and define our purpose and become active in our local or global community in an effective, sustainable and joyful way. Their Seva Challenge for 2009 asks participants to raise significant funds in support of a select few organizations working to eradicate the tremendous financial and health crises that exist in Africa, and creating sustainable solutions for communities in crisis.

YOUR GUIDE: Gina Caputo

Gina is passionate about guiding you on this powerful journey! She feels that a yoga mala of 108 Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) is a powerful moving prayer to initiate activism and water seeds of benevolence for others. A Yoga Mala can awaken vitality and courage within you. It gives you the opportunity to see how powerful you can be when you dedicate yourself and your efforts to others!

The number's significance is open to interpretation, but 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga.

Traditionally, malas, or garlands of prayer beads, come as a string of 108 beads (plus one for the "guru bead," around which the other 108 beads turn like the planets around the sun). A mala is used for counting as you repeat a mantra - much like the Catholic rosary.

Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena have given rise to many examples of ritual significance.

According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body. ÐShiva Rea
